IS YOUR HOUSE BUILT ON ROCK OR SAND?

For the last several months, I have been working on building out my backyard into more of a relaxing area, using the space we have available on our property line. Through this process, I’ve discovered that there are many steps involved, including applying for permits and variances. The reason for this is because the local government wants to ensure that we’re building on solid ground and not coming into contact with natural and manmade drainage systems, which could make our property unstable in future years.

           As I reflected on this in recent weeks, the passage in Matthew 7:24-27 came to mind, which encourages us to build our house on solid rock as a firm foundation, rather than on shifting sand which will cause the house to crash when the storms come. Clearly, this applies to actual construction, but the question we really need to ask ourselves is if we are building our spiritual house on a firm foundation, which can stand strong during the storms of life.

           Once a house is built, it’s very difficult to see the foundation, so how can a person tell if their life is built on rock or sand? In my opinion, the answer is simple.  When a person is standing on solid ground, they can be confident in taking a step without falling, but if you’re walking on sand, your body becomes much more unstable. Psalms 119:105 says, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” This tells me that the Word of God gives us the ability to take our next steps with boldness and confidence because the creator of the universe has illuminated our path.

           Jesus talked about the path we should follow in John 12:26 which says, “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also.”Thinking about this, I echo the words of Joshua 24:15, “…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

           Watching my construction project slowly develop over the last year, I know full well how hard it is to ensure you’re building on a strong foundation. But, I also know that it will be worth it once it’s complete and I can enjoy it without worrying about the weather damaging it.  Build your house on solid rock.  You won’t regret it.
